Theobald Michau was born in Tournai in 1676. Between 1686 and 1698 he was recorded in Brussels, where he was taught by the landscape painter Lucas Achtschellink. By 1710 the painter had moved to Antwerp, where he was recorded in the local Guild of St Luke that year. He lived and worked in Antwerp for the rest of his life.

Michau mostly painted genre scenes and landscapes, and may generally be considered to be a late follower of David II Teniers and Jan I Brueghel. His oeuvre consists mostly of small cabinet paintings on copper and panel, of which the present signed work depicting travellers on a country road is a beautiful example.
